The institution was founded in 1942 on Algonquin territory between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, near downtown Ottawa. Carleton University offers 65 undergraduate and graduate degrees across 50 disciplines. University students can choose between on-campus and off-campus housing. The Residence Complex offers two types of living arrangements: classic and suite-style. Carleton charges separate fees for accommodation and food. An average student's on-campus accommodation costs roughly $7,704, and an average eating plan costs $6,954. The average monthly rent for off-campus accommodation is from 830 to 1025 CAD.

Carleton University's 62-hectare campus is located south of Ottawa's city centre, next to the official historic UNESCO World Heritage Site - Rideau Canal. Along with architectural marvels such as the Carleton Technology. The University's buildings are linked by five kilometres of underground tunnels. The campus comprises 20 academic buildings and more than 200 programmes. Every year, the institution has approximately 200 active student clubs, societies, and organisations on campus.
