Johnson and Wales University (JWU), a non-profit and private college, was founded in 1914 as a business school. Mary T. Wales and Gertrude I. Johnson started it in Providence, Rhode Island. JWU was awarded a charter by the state of Rhode Island in 1963, allowing it to operate as an institution capable of awarding higher education degrees in business administration, secretarial sciences, accounting, and court reporting.

Campus

The institution has campuses in four different places. In Providence, Rhode Island, the first campus was established. The Downside section, was opened in 1914, houses the hospitality, business, and technology programmes. Harborside, another satellite campus, provides graduate and culinary degrees. It first opened its doors in 1985. The second site opened in North Miami, Florida, in 1992. The third site, in Florida, opened in 2000. The fourth campus, in Charlotte, North Carolina, opened in 2004.
