Leeds Beckett University (LBU) began in 1824 with the establishment of the Leeds Mechanics Institute. The institute began with two rooms, a classroom and a library, located on Park Row. In 1841, it relocated to South Parade and merged with the Leeds Literary Society the following year. In 1968, the Leeds Mechanics' Institute and Literary Society relocated to a new location on Cookridge Street. Leeds Beckett University now offers 150 undergraduate programmes and approximately 100 graduate courses to international students. Distance learning is also available at the graduate and postgraduate levels at the university.
