Mississippi State University is an open research university that is officially known as the Mississippi State University for Agriculture and Applied Science. The Morrill Act (1862) established the land-grant institution, which was officially recognised as Mississippi Agricultural & Mechanical College in 1878 and welcomed its first student class in 1880.
