Southwest Minnesota State College (SMSC) founded the university in 1964. It received its first class of students on September 19, 1967. Southwest State University (SSU) was established on August 1, 1975, and it kept that name for over 30 years until it was replaced by Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) on July 1, 2003. Today, the university's several colleges provide over 50 undergraduate and 5 graduate degrees.
