Its origins may be traced back to 1841, when it was established as the Young Men's Mental Improvement Society. After undergoing extensive restorations, it later became a technical college in 1896. Finally, in 1992, the polytechnic was elevated to the rank of university and renamed the University of Huddersfield. Huddersfield University presently offers over 200 undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and postgraduate research degrees.

Metrology and precision engineering facilities; Knitting, Embroidery, and Weaving workshops; Specialist inspection and measurement centre; Materials analysis and characterization laboratory are some of the significant facilities on campus and in the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre.

Annual internship placement and job recruitment exercises are held on campus to provide students with the opportunity to work in a global workplace.
