UAL, which was founded in 1986 as a federation of seven former autonomous colleges, was originally known as the London Institute. The Privy Council granted it the authority to issue degree programmes in 1988. UAL was granted university status in 2003, although it was not until 2004 that it acquired its current name. Today, UAL provides full-time and part-time study programmes, as well as online short courses, to students all over the world. The University offers 101 undergraduate programmes, 117 graduate programmes, and 1126 short courses.
