Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) was founded in 1904 as the Petone Technical School and received its current name in 2001. It is one of New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions, yet it has changed over time to embrace current approaches while remaining focused on teaching actual skills. It now provides a variety of industry-led qualifications ranging from trades to degrees and postgraduate studies. Business, construction, creative, engineering, health and social services, hospitality, information technology, and tourism are among the disciplines covered by the curriculum.

Students can also take advantage of the free bus service that runs between Petone and Porirua and Wellington. The site is separated into many blocks, one of which houses a childcare centre. They also have an ability support team that works with students who have learning impairments.
