Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), founded in 1875, is a highly ranked, publicly financed research university in Indiana County. It was founded in 1871 as the Indiana Normal School under the General Assembly's Normal School Act. The school formally opened in 1875 with 225 students in a single building. Today, Indiana University of Pennsylvania provides Distance Education as well as more than 140 bachelor's programmes, 60 graduate degrees, and 14 PhD programmes, including those in the Eberly College of Business and Technology, the Education School, and the Criminology Department.

Stapleton Library houses a rare and one-of-a-kind collection of over 9 lakh printed books and 2 million internet resources. It has a 280-acre recreational park and the Hadley Complex, which is located near the university. IUP is proud of its College Lodge, where students can enjoy disc golf, bicycling, skiing, and hiking.
