Seneca was founded in 1967 as part of a provincial drive to create an Ontario-wide network of colleges of applied arts and technology that provide career-oriented diploma and certificate courses as well as continuing education programmes to Ontario communities. As technology continues to affect the nature of employment and the provincial economy, the province responded to the growing demand for sophisticated applied learning. General education was seen as an important component of higher education, and breadth courses are still required in all programmes.
